Vote by Mail

Here are the steps to voting by mail, which is convenient and secure. You can vote from the comfort of your own home while taking time to research each candidate.

1/ Send an absentee application to your county auditor.

If you voted in the June 2022 election and you checked “All Statewide Elections” when filling out your absentee application, you should get your November ballot in the mail automatically from the Cass County Auditor in late September. If you submit an application in October, your ballot will be mailed to you a few days after your application is processed.

If you didn’t fill out an absentee application this spring, or if you are not sure if you checked the “All Statewide Elections” box, print the absentee application form or call 701-241-5600 if you’re in Cass County to have the form sent to you.

Complete and sign your application form, then send it to your county auditor. In Cass County, mail it to P.O. Box 2806, Fargo, ND 58108, or email it to election@casscountynd.gov.

2/ Fill Out Your Ballot.

After your receive your ballot in the mail, you can research candidates and measures at vote411.org, an online voting resource organized by the non-partisan group League of Women Voters. Once complete, sign the outer return envelope.

Tips: Sign the return envelope the same way you signed your absentee application (examples: Mike versus Micheal, middle name versus middle initial). Sign your envelope, not an envelope belonging to another voter in your household.

3/ Return your ballot to the Cass County Auditor.

If you return your ballot by mail, it must be postmarked no later than Monday, Nov. 7. However, it is highly recommended you mail it the week prior to Election Day. Postage is required.

Alternatively, you can deposit your ballot in the secure drop box in front of the Cass County Courthouse at 211 9th St. S in Fargo, no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 7. There is a small sign referring to using an envelope from inside the foyer of the courthouse but that is for non-election materials being deposited in the box. Your ballot comes with its own envelope, which you need to sign.

4/ Track your ballot.

You can track your ballot here to see if your ballot has been accepted.

General Tips:

You need to live in your district for at least 30 days before Election Day, and you must be a U.S. citizen to vote. Here are all the requirements for voting, including details for IDs and college students.

If you received an absentee ballot in the mail, then decide you want to vote in person, you can do that - but you are responsible for destroying the absentee ballot. You don’t need to turn in your absentee ballot.

If you moved recently and your driver’s license has an old address on it, you are not required to get a new license to vote; you can update your address with the Dept of Transportation here. It will take a few days to be reflected in the voter file.
